SIGNAL

U3X: Different energy sources impart distinct characteristics to vehicles. Electric vehicles (EVs) are defined by rapid acceleration, quick response, and a sporty driving feel. However, once moving beyond the passenger sector to heavy-load, long-duration operations, EVs face challenges such as heavy weight, high-speed energy consumption, and reduced range in low temperatures. In contrast, the high energy density of hydrogen fuel cells offers significant advantages for logistics applications. Typically, lithium-ion batteries have an energy density of approximately 0.25 kWh/kg, whereas hydrogen fuel cells offer roughly 33 kWh/kg, achieving around 15 kWh/kg in real-world conditions—far exceeding batteries. In long-duration, high-power scenarios, hydrogen vehicles are lighter, offer longer range, and allow for rapid refueling, enabling them to haul more cargo over greater distances compared to electric trucks.

From January to May 2025, sales of hydrogen heavy-duty trucks in China reached 988 units, accounting for 73.3% of total fuel cell vehicle sales, a 64% year-on-year increase. Although hydrogen fuel cell energy density (approx. 15-33 Wh/kg) is significantly higher than lithium batteries (approx. 0.25 Wh/kg), electric heavy-duty trucks still represent about 80% of the existing new energy heavy-duty truck stock. Currently, China has established a hydrogen network covering Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Pearl River Delta, with "hydrogen corridors" operational in the southwest and the New Western Land-Sea Corridor.
Recently, six new regions, including Hami (Xinjiang), Lüliang (Shanxi), and Dalian (Liaoning), joined the fuel cell vehicle demonstration city clusters. Previously, hydrogen mining truck adoption was limited by scarce infrastructure and high costs, allowing electric models to dominate mining areas. The newly added zones, such as Hami with its "Xinjiang coal export" advantage and low land costs, and Lüliang with coke oven gas by-product hydrogen resources, aim to address the lack of infrastructure in western resource-rich regions, extending application scenarios from the eastern coast to the western interior.
