High-Pressure Hydrogen Barrier Coating: An Innovative Solution to Break the Cost Bottleneck of Hydrogen Storage and Transportation
As the hydrogen energy industry accelerates from demonstration applications to large-scale development, the pressure on hydrogen storage and transportation is becoming increasingly prominent. The traditional solution of relying on high-cost special steels (such as 316L stainless steel) to prevent hydrogen embrittlement has become a core cost bottleneck restricting the large-scale construction of hydrogen energy infrastructure. Especially in high-pressure environments of 70MPa, hydrogen atoms are extremely prone to penetrating ordinary steel, causing material embrittlement (hydrogen embrittlement) and directly threatening the safety of long-distance pipelines and hydrogen storage equipment.
HEAC™️
is a new high-pressure hydrogen barrier coating material, offering a completely new "empowerment" approach. This technology does not replace steel but constructs a dense microscopic barrier on the inner wall of cost-effective pipeline steel (such as X70 grade). This composite coating, primarily composed of bio-based polymers, forms a "molecular sieve" structure through ordered particle arrangement technology, effectively blocking hydrogen atom penetration. Its hydrogen permeability is dozens of times lower than that of traditional stainless steel materials, with hydrogen permeability under 70MPa high pressure outperforming national standards by 2 times.
The value of this technology lies in its precise response to the core demand of the industry transitioning from "demonstration" to "large-scale": significantly reducing initial investment and long-term maintenance costs of infrastructure under the premise of strictly adhering to safety standards. With a coating thickness of only about 30μm, it can reduce equipment costs by 65% and extend service life to over 20 years. It enables the use of existing high-grade steel pipeline assets for hydrogen distribution, laying a solid technical foundation for building a national hydrogen pipeline network.
Currently, this technology has been verified through multi-scenario engineering applications, with stable performance across a wide temperature range of -40°C to 180°C, covering extreme scenarios such as plateau hydrogen transportation and deep-sea pipelines. The water-based spraying process reduces production energy consumption by 70%, aligning with carbon neutrality goals. With the implementation of the GB/T42612-2023 standard, high-pressure hydrogen barrier coatings are becoming a key technology driving cost reduction and efficiency improvement in hydrogen energy infrastructure, building a solid safety barrier for the large-scale development of the hydrogen energy industry.
